AT&T has agreed to pay $13 million to resolve an investigation over a data breach of a cloud vendor in January 2023 that impacted 8.9 million AT&T wireless customers, the Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday.

AT&T failed to ensure that a third-party vendor adequately protected the telecom carrier's customers, regulators say.

This week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reached a settlement with telco giant AT&T, fining them $13 million for their lack of oversight over customers’ data security. Back in January 2023, bad actors gained access to the data of 8.9 million AT&T customers via a cyberattack on an unnamed third-party cloud vendor.

The FCC is ordering AT&T to pay a $13 million fine to settle a complaint over cloud security missteps that led to a third-party data breach last year and exposed AT&T customer information. AT&T didn't force the third-party entity and source of the leak to destroy or secure customer data,

AT&T has agreed to pay $13 million in a settlement with the FCC over a 2023 data breach at a third-party vendor’s cloud environment.

The FCC said that the mandatory changes in the settlement's terms will likely require AT&T to make significant investments that far exceed the $13 million fine.
